Q3 FY2025 Sales Figures

Sony released its Q3 FY2025 earnings data, revealing that the PlayStation 5 claimed a sales victory over the Nintendo Switch 2 for the quarter ending September 30, 2025. During this period, 8 million PlayStation 5 units were sold. In contrast, Nintendo sold 7.01 million Switch 2 units in the same window. This specific period represented the first full quarter where the successor to the Nintendo Switch was available on the market.

Historical Context and Regional Performance

The Nintendo Switch 2, which launched in June 2025, achieved total sales of 17.37 million units by New Year’s Eve 2025. Despite Sony’s global lead during the reported quarter, the Switch 2 managed to outsell the PS5 in the United States throughout 2025. Regarding all-time records, the original Nintendo Switch is currently the second-best-selling console with 155.37 million units sold. The PlayStation 2 remains the best-selling console historically, with 160 million units sold worldwide a quarter-century after its release.

Future Hardware Timelines

With the Switch 2 already on the market, Nintendo has established a lead in the current hardware generation. Information suggests that Sony’s PlayStation 6 is not expected to be released until 2027. Similarly, Xbox, which has shifted focus toward publishing in the current console market, is also not expected to launch its next hardware iteration until 2027.
