Valve Reassesses Steam Machine Pricing Amid RAM Market Volatility
Impact of Market Conditions on Launch Details
Valve is re-entering the console market with the Steam Machine, a PC-console hybrid announced in November 2025 with a release window set for the first half of 2026. However, in a blog post released on Wednesday, February 4, the company disclosed that global memory and storage shortages, coupled with rising memory prices, have forced a reassessment of the shipping schedule and pricing structure. This review affects the Steam Machine as well as the Steam Frame VR headset.
Current Release Goals and Official Statements
Despite the industry-wide volatility in the RAM market, Valve states that the objective to ship all three products in the first half of the year remains unchanged. The company noted that while the release window target has not shifted, there is still work to be done to finalize concrete pricing and specific launch dates before they can be confidently announced. These market uncertainties mean that the specific details potential customers were expecting by this stage will continue to be delayed.
Hardware Specifications and Performance Metrics
Valve released an FAQ detailing specific components of the upcoming hardware. The Steam Machine will feature upgradable parts, including the SSD (NVMe 2230 or 2280) and memory (DDR5 SODIMMs). Regarding performance, Valve claims that during test runs, the majority of Steam titles run at 4K 60FPS with FSR enabled. However, they acknowledged that some titles require more upscaling than others, and playing at lower frame rates may be preferable in certain instances. Engineers are currently working on HDMI VRR support, optimizing ray tracing performance, and improving upscaling technologies
